With reference to the controversy that surrounds Julian Alvárez penalty that was disallowed against Real Madrid in the Champions League, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) officially amended the penalty code. As revealed by by IFAB, a successful penalty kick must be retaken if a penalty taker accidentally makes contact with the ball with both feet.

Unlike before, the attempt will no longer count as a miss. The amended rule is inevitable after the controversial penalty shootout between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid in the Champions League finals. Alvárez penalty was ruled out after he put his kick past Thibaut Courtois at the Metropolitano for a dual touch. Atletico Madrid crashed out of the tournament as a result of that missed penalty.
This did not go down well with the central referee as he came under intense pressure from the Los Colchoneros. After many complaints and petitions from the Diego Simone side, the football governing body had no choice than to take up the issue head-on.
UEFA alongside with FIFA and IFAB reached a resolution after reviewing the penalty code, leading to the new amended rule…..
”When the penalty taker accidentally kicks the ball with both feet simultaneously, or the ball touches their non kicking foot or leg immediately after the kick: If the kick is successful, it is retaken “… IFAB clarified.
If the kick is unsuccessful, an indirect free kick awarded ( unless the referee plays advantage it clearly benefits the defending team) or, in the case of penalty shootout, the kick is recorded as missed.
The previous penalty double touch rule stipulated that a player must not touch the ball twice when taking penalty.
