Barcelona’s summer transfer plans have taken a major hit as highly-rated winger Nico Williams has put pen to paper on a new long-term contract with Athletic Club, ending months of speculation linking him with a move to the Camp Nou.
After a second successive summer of intense rumours, which included reported talks between the player’s agent and Barcelona sporting director Deco, it had seemed like a switch to Catalonia was on the cards. Reports even suggested that personal terms had already been agreed, with Barcelona preparing to trigger his release clause.However, in a surprising turn of events, the 22-year-old has chosen loyalty over ambition by extending his stay in Bilbao. Athletic Club announced on Thursday, July 4, 2025, that Williams has signed a new deal keeping him at San Mamés until 2035 — a commitment spanning the next ten seasons.
The club also confirmed that his release clause has been significantly increased, rising by over 50 percent. In the official statement, the club declared: “Nico Williams renews with Athletic Club until 2035. The red-and-white winger commits to the club of his heart for the next ten seasons, and his release clause increases by more than 50%. ”Williams, who has become a key figure for both Athletic and the Spanish national team, expressed his deep connection to the club and its supporters, stating:“ When it comes time to make decisions, my heart always leads the way. I’m right where I want to be, with my people — this is my home. Aupa Athletic!”
The news will come as a significant setback for Barcelona, who had made Williams their primary target for the summer transfer window. With the winger now firmly tied down to Athletic Club, the Catalan giants will have to shift focus and explore alternative options.
